A Tailored Approach to Re-engagement: Post-16 Learner Support

Jessica*, a post-16 learner, was referred to Targeted Provision in 2023 after being out of education since Year 9. She had experienced significant emotional trauma following the loss of several close family members. Jessica has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), dyslexia, and moderate mixed anxiety and depression. She also experiences Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and social communication difficulties.

Jessica was matched with Lisa*, an experienced science practitioner and tutor. Together, they created a bespoke programme focused on KS4 English, Maths, Science, and mentoring. Sessions were adapted based on Jessica’s emotional and cognitive needs each day, providing a safe, responsive space to rebuild her relationship with learning.

Jessica began to make swift progress, particularly in reading comprehension. Lisa observed:

“In a short space of time, Jessica has made fantastic progress with her reading comprehension and is now enjoying reading! We’ve made it okay for her to use strategies she may not have been taught earlier in life. Helping her understand that learning differently is not only acceptable but empowering has made a big difference, and she’s really owning that now.”

Beyond academics, Jessica also works a Saturday job and has expressed an interest in developing a career in that area. Lisa supported her with practical workplace strategies to overcome the barriers she faces. Lisa shared:

“Jessica told me all about her weekend. We’ve been focusing on the challenges she faces at work and how to overcome them. It was amazing to hear how well she’d done, the strategies she used, and the pride she felt in those achievements. We were both so proud!”

With Lisa’s continued encouragement, Jessica has also been able to sit exams, with Lisa acting as her scribe. Jasmine*, the Targeted Provision Support Specialist overseeing this referral, shared:

“It’s going really well. I’m so incredibly proud that over our 13 months working together, Jessica is using the tools, strategies, and resources we’ve developed together to now create her own. It’s a true testament to the effort she’s putting into taking ownership of her learning, both academically and personally.”

Jessica’s journey with Targeted Provision highlights the power of tailored, trauma-informed education and the lasting impact of empowering students to learn in the way that works best for them.

We are proud to continue supporting Jessica as she prepares for further exams and builds her confidence, both in education and beyond.
