Case Study: Olek’s Journey: Growing in Confidence, Language, and Learning

Olek*, a 13-year-old student, was referred to Targeted Provision in 2024. Originally from Ukraine, Olek and his family relocated to the UK in late 2022 as refugees fleeing the war. Olek has a diagnosis of Downs Syndrome and communicates primarily using Makaton, alongside a small number of spoken English words. His first language is Ukrainian, and English is an Additional Language (EAL) for him. Olek has also been affected by emotional trauma stemming from the impact of war and the challenges of transition.

In Ukraine, Olek attended a specialist school and had already begun learning English and letters. Upon arriving in the UK, the initial aspirations for his learning focused on supporting the development of his English language skills to aid in his wider learning and to introduce more meaningful and engaging educational experiences as he adjusted to his new environment.

Olek was matched with Phillip*, an experienced tutor with a background in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Together, they developed a bespoke programme focused on early English and Maths skills. Phillip tailored sessions around Olek’s interests, especially his love of animals, to build engagement and encourage communication.

In one session, Olek used playdough to create animal shapes, counted ducks with support, and confidently signed “1 more.” He enjoyed imaginative play, and showed growing confidence and emotional expression. He also followed two-word instructions and practised fine motor skills while remembering and retrieving hidden toy animals. Phillip has also supported Olek on day trips with his father, helping him experience learning outside the home.

Olek is now more confident, frequently expressing when he needs help, and using language in increasingly meaningful ways. His tutor notes, “Olek’s communication is progressing daily, it’s very exciting to see.”

We’re excited to see Olek’s ongoing growth in both learning and self-confidence.
