How we support our learners at Targeted Provision

Who We Support at Targeted Provision

At Targeted Provision, we are dedicated to supporting young people whose education and well-being are impacted by complex needs, trauma, or other barriers to learning. Our work spans a wide spectrum of learners, from those with social and emotional challenges to those with specific learning difficulties, medical needs, or care experience.

Supporting Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Needs (SEMH)

Many young people struggle to attend school due to social, emotional, and mental health challenges (sometimes referred to as EBSA). They may be unable to leave the house or even their room. Our tutors build relationships slowly and use relational learning strategies tailored to each young person’s interests and pace. We work closely with the wider team around the child to support reintegration into a suitable full-time setting when the time is right.

Moderate and Severe Learning Difficulties

Young people with moderate learning difficulties are often waiting for special school placements. Our tutors provide targeted support to help them develop cognition, learning, communication, and emotional wellbeing. For those with severe learning difficulties, highly personalised learning plans are created by SEND specialists, ensuring progress in areas that have the most impact on daily life.

  • Specific Learning Difficulties: We also support learners in mainstream schools who require extra help due to dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, or similar conditions. Through early intervention, our tutors differentiate work, provide dedicated time, and focus on strategies that allow these young people to thrive academically and emotionally.
  • Care-Experienced Young People: About a third of our learners have experienced care. Introducing a new adult into a young person’s life requires sensitivity and trust. Our tutors are trained to navigate these dynamics, building strong, trusting relationships that underpin all learning and development.
  • UASC and ESOL Support: We work with Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC) and those learning English as an additional language (ESOL), providing bespoke 1:1 or small group support. Our trauma-informed approach helps young people develop language, communication, and life skills, while creating a safe and nurturing educational environment.
  • Learners with Medical Needs: Young people with medical conditions often miss school and need flexible, tailored support. Our tutors accommodate lesson breaks, adapt learning to medical needs, and provide support across all curriculum areas—whether at home, hospital, or hospice.
  • Permanent Exclusion and Reintegration: For those who have been permanently excluded from school, we provide trauma-informed, relational support to re-engage them with education. Tutors act as trusted adults, guiding young people back to full-time settings when appropriate.
